The IRS has expanded its digital support services for individuals living outside the United States or dealing with international tax matters. The updates include broader live chat assistance and expanded access to the Where’s My Amended Return tool.

Expanded Live Chat Assistance
Previously, the IRS's international live chat service was primarily limited to questions about transcripts and the status of amended returns. The service has now been expanded to provide assistance similar to what taxpayers receive through the IRS international non-toll-free phone line.
International taxpayers can now use live chat for questions regarding:
Refunds
Account balances
Payments
Amended return status
Other individual tax account matters
The service is available Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern Time through the IRS Contact My Local Office Internationally page.
For account-specific questions, taxpayers will need to verify their identity using ID.me.
Where’s My Amended Return Expands to International Addresses
The IRS has also expanded its Where’s My Amended Return service to taxpayers with international addresses.
This means individuals living abroad can now use the online tool to check the status of their amended U.S. individual income tax returns, providing an easier way to track their filings without contacting the IRS by phone.
What This Means for U.S. Taxpayers Abroad
These expanded services give taxpayers living outside the United States more convenient ways to access IRS assistance and obtain updates on their tax matters online.
For taxpayers with more complex U.S. and international tax matters, professional assistance may still be necessary to understand their filing and reporting obligations.
